Imagithon Challenge

The Project:
Design a new theme park using the existing infrastructure of the abandoned Six Flags New Orleans. In mid-2020, Alex Kaplan brought together teams of young professionals to practice their design skills under the guidance of industry mentors. Organized as simulated design studios, these groups first developed blue sky pitches for two new theme parks that could be built on the proposed site. For the second half of the challenge (which I was able to be a part of), we refined the existing concepts – developing two lands and some entertainment offerings for each park.
Our team of eight chose to design a land for Deja Reveria: a park centered around the magic of regional legends and folklore, and its ability to connect us all. The land we settled on was called The Forest of the Fae, and was home to mischievous spirits called Feu Follets that collected the essence of storytelling from the human world and imbued Deja Reveria with its magic.
My Role: Writer
Responsibilities Included:
- Writing treatments and log lines for Forest of the Fae as a whole, as well as individual experiences within the land
- Outlining backstory of Deja Reveria (the whole park) for all teams to use as reference
- Writing presentation copy for multiple presenters for final pitch
- Creating concept designs for use in slide deck
My Work:
These examples represent many other similar deliverables.
Land Treatment
In a forsaken world kept alive by the corporeal magic of storytelling, the Forest of the Fae is the beating heart that ensures its survival. Hidden from outside observers by thick walls of vegetation, and teeming with all manner of extraordinary organisms, this mysterious land is packed with awe-inspiring discoveries and exciting new adventures around every corner.
The Forest of the Fae is most notably the birthplace and home of the whimsical feux follets: pure spirits of story and imagination tasked with the salvation and recovery of their entire reality. Feux follets venture forth from their mystical woodland haven to wander the Earth, both as emissaries of their world, and as mischievous instigators of anecdotes. The preservation of Reveria depends on a unique magic known as “l’essence”, which is produced during the ritual exchange of stories by humans, and enables the physical manifestation of legends and folklore. L’essence collected by feux follets from storytellers across the globe is delivered back to Reveria and used to fuel its continued existence.
In this way, the Forest of the Fae acts as a kind of embassy for Reveria – inviting human guests to engage with the history of the realm, while also empowering them to aid in its recovery. A multitude of enchanting experiences see guests playing, dining, and even flying through the canopy with friendly feu follet guides eager to heighten their curiosity and wonder. On their journey, eager visitors are encouraged to become part of the story themselves. Feu follet ambassadors can imbue keepsakes with a magical essence that visitors can take back to their homes to inspire everyday adventures and the sharing of stories well beyond the gates of Deja Reveria.
Interactive Souvenir Experience Log Line
Distinguished guests become part of Reveria’s legacy as they join Lazlo and a host of feu follet ambassadors to handpick enchanted keepsakes that bring even more storytelling magic to Deja Reveria and beyond.
Land Icon Backstory
Looming large deep in the heart of the Forest of the Fae, this humongous fungus is as important as it is impressive. Not only does this icon serve to draw guests into the Forest from the outside, it is also the birthplace of all feux follets, and the central hub for depositing l’essence collected from around the world.
Thousands of years old, and one of the realm’s first magical entities, this cluster of mushrooms plays a special role in the survival of Reveria. During periods of surplus l’essence, new feux follets are spawned from within its massive gills to go out and collect more. When the incoming supply diminishes, a decrease in newborn feux follets restores the natural balance.
Every organism in the Forest is linked via a living web of branches, roots, and vines. Upon delivery of l’essence from feux follets or repeat human visitors, the whole network erupts in a dazzling light show as the magic pulses outward through the Forest: the lifeblood of the land.
